As computer technology has advanced, the average user is left more and more in the dark concerning the inner workings of their computer. Computers are just expected to work and when they don’t, we’re often at a loss as to why. Many users will download programs that promise to fix their problems or increase the performance of their computer without ever knowing what the program does. Registry cleaners like System Mechanic are a perfect example of this.

The Windows registry consists of a bunch of files that tell your computer essential information about every program on your computer. What System Mechanic claims to do is to clean up your registry in a variety of ways in order to help speed up your computer. It also performs a number of supposedly minor optimizations designed to speed up your computer, such as disabling unused background programs and the mysterious “19 ways” it purportedly speeds up your computer.

System Mechanic does everything it says so far as I know. Since they do not advertise what the “19 ways” are in which it speeds up your PC, it’s hard to know if they actually do anything useful. But as a registry cleaner, System Mechanic does what it should. If you hate spending time waiting on programs to finish, however, System Mechanic is not for you. It’s far from the fastest registry cleaner out there today.
Another thing I consider a downside is that it tries to be everything to everyone. We all know that no single program can do everything and make everyone happy. But System Mechanic definitely tries. It tries to have a flashy, easy to use interface, while allowing advanced users to control some actions of the program. Unfortunately, as is often the case when something tries to be everything, it doesn’t quite make the cake. Not only is it not the easiest to use registry cleaner, but it also doesn’t provide as much control over its functionality that many advanced users desire.

System Mechanic tries to be a registry cleaner, hard drive defragmenting utility, system start up editor, Internet speed booster, and security program all rolled into one. While some users might find this useful, it definitely means that this program won’t be giving you the highest quality performance in any of these areas.
System Mechanic is a useful program for anyone who enjoys having an all-in-one computer maintenance program. While its price is extremely steep for a registry cleaner, some users might find the added functionality that this program provides enough to make it worth it.

So while System Mechanic will definitely find a use in the homes of some individuals, anyone who is only in the market for a registry cleaner should look to other programs. RegCure is perhaps one of the best registry cleaning programs available on the market today, providing the perfect mixture of performance and functionality. Anyone looking for a registry cleaner should look at this program before deciding on System Mechanic.
