Simple Betting
This is probably the easiest way of betting. Boxing is simple to understand; you pick one fighter and hope he/she wins. Betting on boxing matches is not as popular as it once was. In 1946, the United States had seen $500 million going towards bets during prizefights. Ever since then, it has been on the decline to where it is right now – an all-time low. It was in 1971 when boxing gave gambling some quick action when Muhammad Ali fought Joe Frazier for the championship. Sports bookies from all over gathered close to one hundred million dollars. The odds were if you picked Ali you would lay down a 6 to 5 wager, if you chose Frazier, you still would have to lay down a 6 to 5 bet. That happens very rarely.
This is largely responsible to the bookies that started to refuse taking bets on available boxing matches, and the bettors just stop betting. But there are, on occasion, bookies that will take a bet toward a prizefight just to keep their “good” customers happy. They don’t usually take more than $500 if the odds are good, but they’ll sometimes take more if it’s a championship fight. The few bookies that do take wagers on boxing matches have a two-point spread price line. That means if the price line is 7-9 and you bet on the favorite to win, you lay down a 9 to 5 wager. If you favor the underdog, you lay down you’re betting a 7 to 5 wager. Trust me, you’ll get the hang of right away, just good luck in trying to find a bookie that will take a bet on a boxing match, if you do – hold on to him.
A top sports bookie once told an interviewer a year or two after the Ali-Frazier championship fight in ’71 that bookies are “crazy” for taking on prizefight bets. This bookie was quoted in saying that “any bookie who takes any fight action is out of their head… I want no part of any fight action.”
